Compressed air work in a warehouse is a flying particle exposure: dust, cardboard fiber, staples, strapping ends, and metal chips are propelled toward the eyes of the user and of anyone nearby.
29 CFR 1910.133(a)(2)Eye and face protection: side protection where flying objects are a hazardThe employer must ensure that each affected employee uses eye protection that provides side protection when there is a hazard from flying objects. Detachable side protectors such as clip-on or slide-on side shields that meet the requirements of the section are acceptable. Blown debris arrives from angles the front lens does not cover, so plain lenses without side protection are not acceptable for compressed air work.
29 CFR 1910.95(b)(1)Occupational noise exposure: controls and hearing protection above the permissible levelsWhen employees are subjected to sound exceeding the levels in Table G-16, feasible administrative or engineering controls must be used. If those controls fail to reduce sound levels within the levels of the table, personal protective equipment must be provided and used to reduce sound levels within the table limits. Impact wrenches, air staplers, pneumatic strapping heads, and open blow-off nozzles are among the loudest sources in a warehouse, so quieter nozzles, mufflers, enclosures, and job rotation come first and hearing protectors carry whatever the controls do not.

A belt driven air compressor in a warehouse mechanical room or maintenance shop is exactly this kind of drive, and its belt guard is never removed or left off after service.
29 CFR 1910.132(a)Personal protective equipment: applicationProtective equipment, including protection for eyes, face, head, and extremities, protective clothing, respiratory devices, and protective shields and barriers, must be provided, used, and maintained in a sanitary and reliable condition wherever it is necessary by reason of hazards of processes or environment, chemical hazards, radiological hazards, or mechanical irritants encountered in a manner capable of causing injury or impairment of any part of the body through absorption, inhalation, or physical contact.
29 CFR 1910.132(d)(1)Personal protective equipment: hazard assessment and equipment selectionThe employer must assess the workplace to determine whether hazards are present or are likely to be present that make personal protective equipment necessary, and where such hazards exist must select and have each affected employee use the types of PPE that protect against the hazards identified in the assessment, communicate the selection decisions to each affected employee, and select PPE that properly fits each affected employee.
