29 CFR 1910.147(a)(2)(ii)Control of hazardous energy: application to servicing during normal production operationsServicing or maintenance that takes place during normal production operations is covered by the lockout standard if an employee must remove or bypass a guard or other safety device, or must place any part of the body into an area on the machine where work is actually performed on the material being processed or where an associated danger zone exists during a machine operating cycle. An exception exists only for minor tool changes and adjustments and other minor servicing activities that are routine, repetitive, and integral to the use of the equipment for production, and only when the work is performed using alternative measures that provide effective protection. 29 CFR 1910.145(f)Accident prevention tagsTags must be used to warn employees of hazardous conditions, equipment, or operations that are out of the ordinary, unexpected, or not readily apparent, and must remain in place until the identified hazard is eliminated or the hazardous operation is completed. Each tag must carry a signal word readable at a minimum distance of five feet and a major message understandable to all exposed employees, employees must be informed of the meaning of the tags, and tags must be affixed as close as safely possible to the hazard by a positive means such as string, wire, or adhesive.
